My words and my pictures. All I have

I’ve had the most amazing couple of days; they definitely made up for my insane, torturous week. My sister is recovering wonderfully both from the birth and the following surgery, my brother in law is on cloud nine, and my niece…she’s the most perfect baby on earth. She’s got these kissable red cheeks, the tinniest, softest hands, and the most beautiful pair of blue eyes I’ve ever seen. Holding her in my arms, feeling her warm body, so trusting, so peaceful, so unpolluted – it changes you. Even jaded me.

My niece is a miracle in so many ways. Her parents have named her Engel, which is German for “angel”, because she’s their little angel. Our little angel. My sister has endometriosis, a very painful disease that makes it almost impossible to get pregnant. All her life she wanted a baby, and when she found this great man who’s by her side in the good and the bad, in health and in sickness, they conceived this perfect little angel we all love so much. This baby has touched all our lives in a special way.

They’re both doing so well they’ll be discharged by tomorrow morning. I was with them two hours after the birth (jetted out of my class, which went great, too), and stayed there for fours hours, which flew by. My sister was glowing, and so happy to have us all there with her. And my niece just slept and ate and she spent about five minutes in the crib because everyone wanted to hold her :).

I’ve been doing so much growing up in the past month that my head’s beginning to spin. And it’s hard to believe that so much happiness can fit into my life. The past three years have been sad and empty, and all of a sudden this year things changed, I changed, our lives changed. I can hardly say how grateful I am for all that is happening. I hope it’s the beginning of something even greater.

I leave you with these shots of the last lovely sunset we had before the ash and the clouds. I haven’t seen the sun in days, but somehow I haven’t really noticed. I wish you all as much happiness as I’m experiencing now :).

  2. I would say you are seeing the sun in your life instead of the sky! Congrats on the birth of your niece! Gorgeous, as usual, photos. : )

    • It’s been so hard to see anything good for so long that so much sunshine is hard to believe, but it’s so, so beautiful :). Glad you like the pics, and thanks for the congrats!

  3. Thank-you so much for sharing your happy thoughts

  4. Beautiful shots and congrats to the proud parents and one happy aunt..:-))

  5. As always your work is beautiful. I wish you continued happiness in your life.

  6. Well that’s certainly one heck of a lot of great news… Congratulations to Auntie and everyone else… Wonderful shots too by the way.. 🙂

    • I know! I take a break from all that’s going on and think about everything good that has happened this year, and I can’t believe it’s all happening to me!
Thanks, and I’m glad you enjoyed the photos!

  7. Wonderful story and images…congrats! And thank you for the reminder that despite all else, there’s always some sunshine out there.

    • Thank you! I’m always hesitant about sharing too much about myself on the blog, but I thought this story deserved to be told, because maybe someone would find some hope and joy in it. I’m glad I posted it!

  8. Congrats on the new little miracle! My cousin and her baby girl (she’ll be one in July) were with my folks and I yesterday. Baby girls are sweet little things 🙂 And lovely shots!

    • Thanks, Eden! They’re so pretty, even when they cry, and I’ve never been too keen on crying babies. It’s amazing how one little person who isn’t two hours old can touch you so deeply.

  9. Congratulations on your little niece! 🙂 I am glad to hear that you have great things going on in your life 🙂 These photographs are beautiful as always!

  10. so happy to hear the happy news! Babies bring so much joy to families. And the photos are a perfect expression of that beauty and happiness. Very glad that you are feeling good 🙂

    • Glad to know my news made you happy :). Happiness does seem to spread, doesn’t it?
I’d never had a baby in the family before, and it’s a miracle. You should see my Dad’s face when he talks to my sister or my brother in law on the phone and he hears my niece cry in the background :). I just can’t wait to hold her in my arms again!

  11. Congratulations ‘Aunty’ 🙂 What a beautiful story. Thank you so much for sharing this. I needed something happy to read right now. What a beautiful name – and from what you’ve written, her name seems very apt. I hope one day, when she’s old enough, you’ll be able to teach her your photography skills!! 🙂

Ahh, this is such a lovely post. I am so happy for you and your family. My niece turned 1 a couple of months ago, she lives in Germany and I am yet to meet her. I am hoping that they will come to visit Australia over Christmas. Nieces are very special!!

Beautiful photographs as per usual. I’m sorry about all the ash at the moment. It’s crazy. The ash has turned up now in Australia and many flights were cancelled because of it. I hope it’s not interfering with your day to day living too much?

    • Thanks, Sam! I’m happy my story allowed you to share my happiness. Like I said, I’m not one to share much about such personal things, but I thought this story was so full of miracles that it deserved to be told.
I’ll shower my niece in books and pictures as she grows up, and I’ll be too happy to share what I know about photography if she’s interested in the future. Being an aunt is awesome :).
How’s the ash situation over there this week? The consequences here are terrible for people living south of Buenos Aires; the sheep are dying because there’s no grass to feed on, water’s short to come by, and there are heaps (literally) of ash piling everywhere. It’s awful!

  12. Congratulations on becoming an aunt! 🙂

Your sunsets are, as always, beautiful. They go well with your words.

  13. Congratulations on your neice!! I thought we were going to get a picture of her! lol. The sunsets are beautiful too though.

    • Thanks! I must confess I was the only sensible member of the family who didn’t take the camera to the hospital and start torturing the poor newborn baby with flash after flash, and I haven’t been to visit them again, so I don’t have any pictures yet. I’m not sure I’d post them anyway, unless they were really good or artistic.
Glad you like my sunset shots!

  14. Congratulations on being an aunt to a beautiful angel! I felt my heart grow with happiness as I read your lovely story and seeing the beautiful sunset photos. Thank you for sharing… 🙂

    • Thanks, Emily! I’m glad I posted this story after reading how it touched some people :). It’s great to be able to share the good things that are happening in my life :).

  15. yeah for a happy story! congrats auntie!!

  16. Belen, I love the writing here and I can sense your happiness. I feel like getting to know you a lot better, and that takes time, I am glad that you are where you feel content.

Thank you for being such a loyal visitor to the updates on my site as well. Look forward to your future comments there. 🙂

BTW, I know you are an ocean and sunset kind of gal. Would LOVE to see your angel niece’s pictures if you so feel inclined to take a few. 🙂

    • Thanks for everything you said in this comment, it was all really sweet :).
I can’t seem to be able to take a decent picture of my niece. Since it’s winter here and she’s barely weeks old she’s never outside, and my camera is no good at taking pictures indoors. I want to try using a second flash (gotta buy those batteries!) next time, and see if I can get to play around with the camera and the baby :). This month has been so crazy that I’ve hardly had time to even visit them, but classes are almost over and I’m almost free!

  17. Wow Wow Wow,,,

  18. I know that this was posted in June, But I still wanted to congratulate you and your family on the beautiful new ‘angel’! This was such a beautiful and touching entry. I could feel you through your words, and got a small glimpse of your soul. I am really happy that your life is getting better for you, and that you are feeling happier in these days. I hope that this good fortune continues for you. Thanks for sharing this heartfelt story. And Gorgeous photos! And I loved the part about not noticing there had been no sun for days….:)…..Wishing you well, Celeste. 🙂

    • Thanks for such a nice comment, Celeste. My niece makes us all smile and feel lighter with her giggles and her big, blue eyes. These days I have a much more positive outlook on life, so being happy is much easier, and good things keep coming my way. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos!
