I never thought I was going to do one of these (I hated painting still natures in art class, even more than I hated painting in general – which I did because I’ve never been able to draw anything beyond an awfully misshapen tree), but I was up early today so I dropped by my grandma’s, and there we were, talking about life, when I saw three totally shootable tomatoes sitting on her countertop. Can you believe these things grow in her backyard? I amuse myself; I love shooting living things, but I can’t make them grow for the life of me.
I burned the background a little bit in Photoshop, to make the fruits stand out (yeah, I’m one of those dorks who know tomatoes are actually fruits, not vegetables). I don’t have a DSLR, but I get by all the same.

Very nice photo, painterly look, which I would like to see photographer’s use more. Nice burn on the background, also add’s to the old world canvas look. Nice job.

Thanks! This is my reconciliation with the art of painting. I wish I could show this to my high school art teacher. I could never ace her assignments, but look what I can do with a camera :).

I’ve enjoyed looking at all of your photos, but these tomatoes have really caught my eye. You captured the scene so well from the beautiful color of the tomatoes to the perfect backdrop of the kitchen. The whole photo instantly brought back memories of the tomatoes my own grandma used to grow. Thank you.

I’m so glad my grandma decided to grow these tomatoes; it’s been a beautiful connection between us. We’ve always been close, but these tomatoes were a bridge between my grandma and what I love most (photography), and my shooting and posting them has made her feel important. I’m happy I’ve immortalized them – they’ll always be a beautiful memory.
